TechBytes: Escape Room – Office Edition

We’re going a bit off-the-rails for this issue and have decided to make this a bit more interactive. Take a Post-it and keep track of your answers, you’ll need them at the end, that is, if you can survive Monday morning…

Let’s begin.

Monday. 8:03 AM.

Coffee is brewing in the break room. Teams notifications are firing off like fireworks. Someone nearby has already said, “Well, it was working Friday…” and a printer down the hall has resumed its long-standing campaign against humanity.

You sit down at your desk.

Your mission is simple:

Survive the morning.

Choose wisely.

Room 1: The Inbox of Uncertainty

You open Outlook and immediately spot an email:

URGENT: Password Expiring in 18 Minutes

“Failure to act may result in account suspension.”

The sender:

support-team@micr0soft-account-security-help-now.com

You decide to:

A) Click immediately. Rules are rules.
B) Hover over the link and inspect it.
C) Forward it to coworkers with: “Hey does this look weird?”

Take your pick.

ROOM 2: The Mysterious USB

As you walk through the office, you discover a USB drive near the printer.

A sticky note reads:

Payroll – Confidential

Interesting.

You:

A) Plug it in immediately. Curiosity fuels progress.
B) Turn it over to IT.
C) Ask around: “Did anyone lose a tiny rectangle of mystery?”

Room 3: The Update Window Appears

You sit back down.

A message appears:

Updates Available
Restart Now
Remind Me Tomorrow

You suddenly remember you’ve selected “Remind Me Tomorrow” approximately 47 times.

You choose:

A) Install updates
B) Delay another day
C) Close the message and pretend technology cannot see fear

Room 4: Conference Room of Destiny

You enter a meeting room and see a QR code taped beside the screen.

“Scan here for meeting documents.”

You:

A) Scan immediately
B) Inspect whether it looks placed over another code
C) Assume fate will guide you

Results

Mostly A’s
You survived entirely through confidence and luck. IT would like a brief conversation.

Mostly B’s
Excellent instincts. You spotted enough suspicious activity to probably avoid clicking mystery links from princes, lotteries, and long-lost relatives.

Mostly C’s
You operate on pure improvisation. Surprisingly adaptable. Mildly concerning.

Bonus Round

You discover a printer displaying:

Error: Code 0x800-Mystery

Do you:

A) Restart it
B) Contact IT
C) Accept your new life in the woods and disappear into legend

There may not be a wrong answer. HR declined to comment.

Escape Room Status:

□ Escaped

□ Compromised

□ Awaiting IT Assistance

One choice in this adventure is intentionally the worst possible option. See if you can identify it before checking with coworkers.

Until next Byte.
